Outdoor Rock Climbing Basics

This one-day Gym To Crag rock climbing clinic is based in Rifle Mountain Park, Colorado and is designed to help climbers transition from indoor gym climbing skills to the thrilling outdoor environment. Learn essential outdoor rock climbing safety, basic knots, belaying and rappelling techniques from our AMGA certified guides. Become a confident and responsible climbing partner ready to explore Colorado’s crags! Throughout this Gym To Crag clinic we will cover the following skills:

  • Equipment selection

  • Belayed climbing and rappelling

  • Communication strategies

  • Rock anchors

  • Cleaning a top rope anchor

  • How to lead sport climbs

  • Introduction to basic rescue systems

This clinic is offered at an on-demand custom basis.

Prior indoor rock climbing experience is necessary. Climbers should be able to comfortably follow pitches up to at least 5.8 in difficulty.

Grand Junction or Rifle Regional Airport are convenient airport locations for this program if arriving by air. A personal or rental car is necessary to travel to/from Rifle Mountain Park.

Grand Junction is based 1.5 hours away and the town of Rifle is 15 minutes away. There are multiple hotels in both areas. There is paid camping in Rifle Mountain Park though it can be busy during peak climbing season.

Climbers are responsible for providing their own personal clothing and equipment. Skyward Mountaineering may assist in supplying technical equipment with advanced notice. Please see recommended equipment list below:
